Not what I expected but it was okay. Helpful Report abuse. Heatherle Chambers Reviewed in the United States on December 27, We had a big group of my daughter's high school and older friends over for BBQ and a movie night, and was STUNNED at how this impacted them. I had no idea that in a generation's time the script and expectations for dating had changed so much, and how much they wanted that script back to rely on.
They were really jealous of the fact that I was set up on dates so often in high school and college, and how that helped me develop conversational skills and meet interesting people and have some amazing stories later about the dud dates.
Not having really any rules or conversations about dating has robbed them of those experiences, and made dating seem really high stakes now. They are super stressed about it, and grateful for the opportunity to talk about it together and with adults. We had some amazing conversations for weeks afterwards, and still refer to the movie in conversations. They have also went out and told friends about the movie, and the idea of three levels of dates, and it has inspired some of their friends to really step back from how they used to approach relationships.
We're Catholic, and this movie reflected our values. Honestly, though, it doesn't come from any religious point of view. I think it is very well designed for any group that wants to have a conversation about dating and human dignity in relationships. It didn't talk about Ven. Fulton Sheen and his advice to love people, and use things because doing the opposite never works yup, that's where Drake got that lyric.
His dad's Catholic, and Sheen was a bit of a rock star priest in his time , but this film very much reminds us to take that advice and apply it in life. There aren't any creepy chastity promises required, or conversations about that wrong headed idea that girls' sexuality belonging to their fathers, just conversations about how we all want to connect genuinely with other people.
This movie reminds young people of that, and that innocent ice cream dates are a darn good way to discern whether or not someone you think is interesting might be worth your investment of time. J Nixdorff Reviewed in the United States on January 9, I would recommend this movie to everyone. What I liked was the honesty and the realness. Fulfilling selfish desires does not make people happy.
The sexual revolution promised freedom. They did not warn us how lonely this freedom would make us. Dating is a necessary part of getting to know someone. In today's world the goals have been changed. In the past we had dating, marriage and sex. This makes perfect sense. As this would lead to a committed relationship and then the birth of children. Now people are skipping the first two and without any commitment. If children are conceived they are a problem and not a joyful addition to a family.
Single lonely people are everywhere like never before. Dating should have the goal of a lasting relationship and marriage, All countries and cultures have done this for centuries. It is time to bring it back. Math Mom Reviewed in the United States on August 2, I have watched this with both high school and college aged students.
As a parent, not only did I get a better understanding of how the dating landscape has changed, but also more empathy for those having to deal with it. The singles, who are actually the target audience, received valuable information about how to regain some of the lost art of dating: planning, timing, paying, what to talk about, etc.
These are things that we used to take for granted, but simply are no longer in the script. The movie makes a good case for why they should be. In addition, it was easy to find oneself taking an interest in the five people who are highlighted in the film and who often express eloquently their struggles and their feelings in finding someone to love in a hook-up culture.
I plan to give this to several singles I know - it's that good! Joan's opinion Reviewed in the United States on July 4, Probably one of the best movies on the "dating dilemma" facing so many of us! We've lost our way and need to realize that sometimes things from the past have some real value.
This film correctly depicts the habits and norms of what the current situation is in the dating game; too many options, FOMO, shallowness and unrealistic expectation and I'm guilty of all of them!
It poses some REAL questions for you to ponder if you are also participating in this "game. Time VERY well spent watching this one!
Catholic Kerygma mom Reviewed in the United States on June 4, If people really want to know what is wrong with current relationships look no further than this movie. Who would have ever though courting would become a novel approach or lost art. This film hits it out of the park and should be viewed by every teen on up..
Creme Reviewed in the United States on November 17, This video should be shown to every high school student and college freshman before they ruin their life with multiple casual hook ups.
It's not that they want to ruin their life, they just don't know how not to. This gives some direction.

I was not sure at first whether to go see this movie or not. The subject is a touchy one for me, and as the film proves, for many people out there as well. It seemed to me that a film about dating could either focus on the awful way men and women treat each other these days, or offer simple solutions to a complicated problem.
The film is as objective as a documentary can be, and it is neither bleak nor naïve. The documentary focuses on five real people: two college students one female, one male in their late teens, a female college student in her twenties, a woman in her thirties, and a man in his forties.
The first two, Shanzi and Matt, are a part of the hookup culture, it seems, without even realizing it: this is simply the way their generation "functions. The woman in her thirties, Rasheeda, has a similar problem, because she has a job that takes up most of her time.
Chris, finally, feels that life is passing him by while he decides whether he is ready for the commitment that a good, solid relationship entails. All of these people, who come from different cities Boston, Monterrey, Chicago, Los Angeles , are looking for love, but they do not know how to go about it. At the center of the documentary is Dr. Kerry Cronin, a philosophy professor who gives her students and ultimately, the viewer a dating assignment, and explains the different stages of the lost art of traditional dating.
As I watched the film, the old feeling rose up in me: the realization that we live in a world where so many people feel isolated, where so many people are desperate to meet someone who is out there desperate to meet them! Many of us are terrified of simply waiting only to find later in life that nothing has happened.
The film captures this modern anxiety very well. One of the ideas it conveys is that we are not naturally born with the ability to love, as we seem to assume; that love is an art, and as such, it must be cultivated. The film doesn't claim that there were no problems in the age of traditional dating.
It simply suggests that traditional dating would help many people to avoid the mistakes they would make by becoming a part of the shallow and unsatisfying hookup culture the media try to sell. Documentaries have agendas, or theses; that simply comes with the genre.
Some will also argue that as soon as you introduce a camera, you cannot speak of "real life. A film is a film, and life is life. What this documentary presents is a glimpse into lives that may resonate with viewers. It does not claim to represent an entire society. It is true without being depressing, and hopeful without being naïve.
